Join us at Brookside Farm for Game of Logging Levels 1 & 2, a two-day, hands-on chainsaw safety and woodland skills training led by Bill Girard.

Game of Logging is a nationally recognized, hands-on training program designed to help participants develop safer, more efficient chainsaw skills. The training combines instruction, demonstration, and active practice in the field.

Level 1 focuses on foundational chainsaw safety and precision felling. Participants will learn about personal protective equipment, chainsaw safety features, reactive forces, pre-planning the fell, precision and open-face felling, bore cutting, and understanding hinge wood strength.

Level 2 builds on those skills with chainsaw maintenance, filing and sharpening, limbing, bucking, spring-pole cutting, and additional hands-on felling practice. Participants will also learn to buck the trees cut during the training into firewood and may take firewood home if they wish.

This training is also an opportunity to help Brookside restore its ecosystem while gaining practical woodland-management skills.

Participants who complete both days will receive a Certificate of Completion for Game of Logging Levels 1 & 2.

Only 10 spots are available, so early registration is strongly encouraged.

What to bring:

Participants should arrive prepared for a full day outdoors and active work in the woods. Dress for the weather and for walking and working on uneven ground.

You must bring your own personal protective equipment in order to participate.

The following PPE are required: a forestry or safety hard hat, eye protection or face shield, hearing protection, chainsaw chaps or chainsaw-protective pants, and sturdy work boots., work gloves are also recommended.

Hard hat or forestry helmet
Eye protection or face shield
Hearing protection
Chainsaw chaps or chainsaw-protective pants
Sturdy work boots
Work gloves, recommended
Weather-appropriate outdoor clothing
Water bottle
Your own chainsaw, if you have one and would like to train with it

A chainsaw can be provided if needed.

If bringing your own chainsaw, it should be in safe working condition and appropriate for hands-on training.

This is a physically active, outdoor training. Other Game of Logging hosts advise participants to expect a full day outside, walking on uneven terrain and actively operating a chainsaw. Some Level 1 classes require each participant to fell a tree as part of completing the course.

Refund and waiting list policy:
Because this class is limited to only 10 participants, registration fees are refundable only if your space can be filled by someone on the waiting list. Once the class fills, Brookside Farm will maintain a waiting list. If a registered participant cancels, we will contact people on the waiting list in order as spaces become available. If you are registered and discover that you can no longer attend, please notify us as soon as possible so we have the best chance of filling your spot.
