MVCS Outdoor Classrooms Project

At Mountain Village Charter School (MVCS), we want to continue our journey to learn and grow in the safest way possible. When we came here eight years ago, we embraced Fort Creek and the slopes of Tenney Mountain as a central element in our teaching philosophy. Our staff has worked diligently to bring Maria Montessori's practice into our woods, yet we still have relied and utilized indoor spaces as part of our program. But now, under our current pandemic circumstances, our indoor spaces have become a limiting factor to providing a safe educational space. To bring students back to campus, we need to adapt our outdoor infrastructure to meet these needs.

To meet the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic and to keep our kids in school and safe, we are embracing our outdoor mission. The creation of dedicated trails, outdoor learning spaces and semi-permanent structures for each class will substantially reduce our indoor footprint, creating a safer learning environment for both our students and teachers. By bringing our indoor capacity out-of-doors, we will continue to achieve the high quality of education we provide at MVCS.

To meet these needs, we propose to build:

dedicated trails to promote spatial distancing
outdoor hand hygiene stations
5 semi-permanent post and beam structures, one for each class

During the COVID-19 pandemic, neither state nor federal agencies have provided adequate funds to meet these needs. We are appealing to our community to support our efforts to bring teachers and students back to our campus in a safe and healthy manner. Join us as we work to raise $5000 and continue to engage, inspire, and explore at our Mountain Village campus.

The MVCS COVID-19 Leadership team is entirely based on volunteers. Teachers, staff, parents, and community members have spent countless house donating their time and expertise to developing a plan that will keep our students and staff safe and healthy.
